Business English – what is it?

When you speak to your partner or kids, do you use a different way of speaking?  What about when you speak to your boss at work?  We all tend to modify our language depending on to whom we are speaking.  However, certain fields of work have their own vocabularies and may require greater clarity than other speaking or writing.

Business english is the language we use when conducting business.  It is important to be clear in what we say or write so that there is no room for misinterpreting the language.  It is best not to use informal language, Clichés, slang and so on, as the meaning of these is open to different interpretations.

When I was a lawyer, if a client wanted me to write a letter to another party on his or her behalf, I would ask if they wanted a long letter or a short letter, with the short one costing more because it required more work to condense the word count to use just as many words as needed to get the message across.  Don’t use 2 words when 1 will do.  Business letters are not aiming to win literature prizes.

English – what a language!

Welcome to English2Work. This is my first post!

English is a rich language, full of ways to confuse learners, but also a great way to be able to communicate with people in many different corners of the planet.  It has not stopped evolving, with many new words being added to the dictionary every year.  Like many other languages, it is easy to get started and become able to communicate on holiday or with friends, but it takes time and effort to be able to speak fluently in more technical situations, and to understand the nuances when specific words are used in a context.  I am always impressed when I hear a non-native English speaker on the radio or TV speaking unaccented English, because I know how much effort that has taken.  It is helpful to students that there is so much English language video and audio content to listen to and learn from, but there are hopefully still times when a teacher can help with the rough edges.
